How to Set Intentions (Not Resolutions) for a Meaningful Year Ahead

As the new year rolls in, it’s natural to feel the pull of fresh starts and new beginnings. Many of us rush to scribble down resolutions, determined to make this year different. But how often do those resolutions leave us feeling overwhelmed or guilty when life happens and we can’t keep up? I’ve been there, and I know the pressure of trying to force big changes without a roadmap rooted in self-awareness.

What I’ve found more meaningful—and less daunting—is setting intentions rather than resolutions. Intentions are not about rigid rules or unrealistic expectations. They’re about creating a guiding framework for your year, aligned with who you want to be.

Resolutions often feel like a list of "shoulds"—external goals we think will make us better, happier, or more successful. They tend to focus on fixing perceived flaws rather than embracing our strengths or values. On the other hand, intentions are about tuning into your inner compass. They’re grounded in your core values, allowing you to grow authentically and adapt as life evolves.

Unlike resolutions, which are rigid and can lead to feelings of failure if unmet, intentions offer flexibility. They allow room for setbacks and celebrate progress rather than perfection. When you approach your year with intentions, it feels less like a race against time and more like a mindful journey.

How to Set Meaningful Intentions

1. Reflect on the Past Year

Before you can set intentions for the year ahead, take time to reflect on the one you’ve just lived. Ask yourself:

  • What brought you joy?

  • What drained your energy?

  • Where did you feel most aligned with your true self?

  • What lessons did you learn?

Reflection isn’t about dwelling on what went wrong but understanding your experiences and using them as a guide for the future.

2. Identify Your Core Values

Intentions are most powerful when they align with your values. Think about what matters most to you—whether it’s family, creativity, health, connection, or personal growth. When your intentions reflect these values, they become a natural part of your daily life rather than something you have to force.

3. Start with One Word or Phrase

A simple way to set intentions is to choose a word or phrase that embodies your focus for the year. For example:

  • “Balance” to prioritize work and rest.

  • “Courage” to step outside your comfort zone.

  • “Connection” to nurture relationships.

This word acts as an anchor, guiding your decisions and actions throughout the year.

4. Break It Down

Intentions can feel abstract, so breaking them into actionable steps makes them more tangible. For instance, if your intention is to foster self-care, identify specific practices like journaling, taking regular walks, or scheduling monthly “me-time.”

5. Be Kind to Yourself

The beauty of intentions is their flexibility. Life isn’t always predictable, and that’s okay. Instead of seeing setbacks as failures, view them as opportunities to recalibrate. Self-compassion is key to staying aligned with your intentions.

Practical Examples of Intentions

To give you a better idea, here are some examples of intentions and how they can guide your year:

  • Intention: “I will cultivate gratitude.”

    • Action: Start a daily gratitude journal, listing three things you’re thankful for each evening.

  • Intention: “I will nurture my relationships.”

    • Action: Schedule weekly calls with loved ones or dedicate time to meaningful conversations.

  • Intention: “I will prioritize my health.”

    • Action: Focus on nourishing meals, regular movement, and mindfulness practices.

These small, consistent steps align with your values and create meaningful change over time.

The Role of Mindfulness in Intentions

Setting intentions isn’t a one-time activity; it’s a practice that requires mindfulness. Regularly revisit your intentions to ensure they still align with where you are and where you want to go. You might journal about your progress, meditate on your intentions, or even create visual reminders to keep them top of mind.

Mindfulness helps you stay present and connected to your intentions, ensuring they remain a source of inspiration rather than pressure.

How Coaching Supports Intentional Living

As someone who has walked this path with many clients, I can tell you that setting intentions is a transformative process—but it’s not always easy to navigate alone. This is where coaching can make a significant difference.

A coach helps you:

  • Gain Clarity: Understand your values, strengths, and priorities.

  • Create Accountability: Stay on track with your intentions and adjust them as needed.

  • Overcome Obstacles: Identify and work through the barriers holding you back.

Intentional living isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. With personalized support, you can stay focused and empowered as you work toward a life that feels aligned with who you truly are.
